Hokies use Long Ball to Take Series from Clemson

Virginia Tech got home runs from Jordan Lynch, Annika Rohs and Nora Abromavage, as the 11th-ranked Hokies cruised to a 10-5 victory over Clemson Saturday at Tech Softball Park in Blacksburg, Va. The win allowed Virginia Tech to win the series, 2-1.

The Hokies (33-5, 9-3 ACC) finished the night with 10 hits. Addison Foster led her team with a 3-for-4 night at the plate, while Rohs and Abromavage were both 2-for-3.

Clemson (25-16, 7-8 ACC) held its own at the plate. The Tigers got home runs from Sarah Breaux, Taylor Pipkins and Corri Hicks and had six hits overall, but Virginia Tech’s hitting was too much to overcome. Breaux led the way for Clemson with a 2-for-3 game.

After limiting the Hokies to two runs in a Game 1 victory on Thursday, Clemson ace Sierra Maness had no answer on Saturday. One of the ACC’s top pitchers allowed seven runs on seven hits in four innings. She had just one strikeout and walked one.

After Clemson squandered an opportunity to score in the top of the first inning, the Hokies did not in the bottom frame. With one out, Michelle Chatfield singled up the middle to drive in two runs, while Kylie Aldridge flew out to centerfield to plate a third run for a quick 3-0 lead.

The Tigers answered in the top of the second when Breaux took a one-out offering from starter Emma Mazzarone to left centerfield. The home run was a two-run jack, as Julia Knowler reached on a field error to open in the inning.

Breaux’s long ball was the second of the series for the third baseman, as she also hit a three-run homer in the Tigers’ win in Game 1 on Thursday night off of Mazzarone.

Virginia Tech responded in the bottom of the second, as Lynch took a two-out pitch from Maness and sent it over the wall in leftfield for a two-run homer and a 5-2 lead after two innings.

The Hokies extended their lead to 6-2 in the fourth after Rohs homered to left with one out.

Pipkins recorded her second home run of the series in the top of the fifth inning, as she sent a 1-2 pitch from Mazzarone to left field, as well. The sophomore’s seventh home run of the season cut the Hokies lead to 6-3.

Though Clemson ran off Mazzarone with runners on second and third and one out in the fifth inning, they could get just one run across the plate off reliever Bree Carrico and still trailed Virginia Tech, 6-4.

Abromavage smacked the Hokies third home run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, to extend their lead on the ACC’s win-leader to 7-4. The dinger ran Maness off in the circle. Virginia Tech got three runs after that to put the game away.

Hicks’ got a one-out home run for the Tigers in the top of the sixth inning that made the score 10-5, but they got no closer.
