Tony Elliott Agrees to Contract Extension

Virginia has extended Tony Elliott.

The former Clemson assistant – now entering his fifth season as Virginia’s head coach in 2026 – has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him at UVA through the 2030 season.

The school announced the extension Wednesday.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Tony Elliott continue to lead our football program,” Virginia athletics director Carla Williams said in a statement. “His commitment to the values of the University of Virginia and his commitment to developing the whole person through football have been a blessing. His vision of building the model program has never wavered, despite extraordinary adversity. The future is bright for UVA football and we’re excited to continue this work together.”

Elliott earned ACC Coach of the Year honors in 2025, when he led Virginia to a school-record 11 wins and its first ACC Championship Game appearance since the 2019 season. The Cavaliers finished the season with a 13-7 victory over Missouri in the Gator Bowl – the program’s first bowl win since 2018.

Virginia finished the year ranked No. 16 in the AP Poll, marking its highest final AP ranking since 1995. The Cavaliers went 7-1 in ACC play, claiming the top spot in the ACC regular season standings outright for the first time in program history.

Of course, Elliott spent 11 years at Clemson. He was promoted to assistant head coach and offensive coordinator in January 2021 after seven seasons as co-offensive coordinator (2014–20) and a decade as running backs coach (2011–20).

Before his championship-filled tenure with the Tigers, Elliott was a wide receiver at Clemson from 1999-2003 and was a team captain of the 2003 squad for which Dabo Swinney served as Elliott’s position coach in Swinney’s first year at Clemson.

During his time at Clemson, Elliott helped the Tigers win seven ACC Championships and win two national titles in 2016 and 2018.

He was named Virginia’s 41st head football coach on Dec. 10, 2021.
