Clemson Drops 5th ACC Series

No. 9 Virginia got by Clemson 5-4 on Saturday at Disharoon Park, sending the Tigers to their fifth ACC series loss this season.

Nate Savoie and Jacob Jarrell both had multi-hit games, while Luke Gaffney and Bryce Clavon both hit solo home runs.

For the third consecutive game, Clemson (25-16, 6-12 ACC) was able to get on the board first. After Tryston McCladdie was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the first, he immediately stole second and was moved to third on a fielder’s choice by Gaffney. Jarrell then singled into right, extending his hitting streak to 10 games and giving the Tigers the early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, Harrison Didawick hit one out to center that Clavon could not corral up against the wall, and Didawick would come all the way around to score on an inside-the-park home run, tying the score at 1-1. Replays showed the ball actually went over the fence.

Virginia (28-13, 12-9) would go on top in the bottom of the third with a two-out solo homer from Joe Tiroly, his seventh of the season, making it 2-1.

A solo homer from Sam Harris with one out in the bottom of the fourth, his 12th of the season, extended the Cavs’ lead to 3-1.

Virginia added to the lead in the bottom of the sixth, getting an RBI single from Kyle Johnson to make it 4-1.

Clemson got a run back in the seventh. Dylan Harrison pinch hit for Jackson Moore and singled into right. He would advance to second on a wild pitch and come around to score on a double off the wall by Savoie, pulling the Tigers to within 4-2.

Didawick added his second homer of the day, another solo shot in the bottom of the seventh, pushing the Cavaliers’ lead back out to three at 5-2. It was his seventh home run of the season.

Gaffney’s second long ball of the weekend, and his fifth of the season, came leading off the top of the eighth, pulling Clemson back to within three. Clavon then went deep, an opposite field solo shot, making it 5-4. It was his fourth home run this season.

First Career At-Bat

Harrison, who was a big two-way prospect coming out of high school, got his first opportunity at the plate in the seventh. He came in as a pinch hitter and stroked a single into right.
