And then there was one.
Clemson’s pursuit of a running back in the 2027 class is down to one target, four-star Gary Walker (Creekside, GA).
In-state talent Tre Segarra (Byrnes) nabbed the first running back offer last summer, and the board did not officially expand until Andrew Beard (Prince Avenue Christian, GA) picked up one in January. While Segarra is still uncommitted, the Tigers did not make his list of finalists. Beard committed to Florida late last week.
Walker picked up his offer after making his first visit to campus for the Elite Retreat in March. He returned later that month for a second spring visit. He is scheduled to be back for the big official visit weekend, May 29-31. Stanford, Penn State, Florida State and Virginia Tech are the other schools set to get officials.
After speaking with multiple sources over the weekend, I think there is a possibility that Walker’s recruitment might not make it to official visits. Stanford is slated to get the first one the weekend of May 22, with the Clemson one to follow. LSU did pull the trigger on an offer on Thursday, but as of now, there’s been no change to his schedule.
Even if he does see through some of the upcoming visits, I still believe Clemson is positioned well to finish this thing off.
The coaching staff has really made Walker the priority in recent weeks, with running backs coach C.J. Spiller doing an in-home with the blue-chip back a couple of weeks back. Walker was also expecting Spiller to attend one of his spring practices late last week.
The 6-foot, 200-pound prospect rushed for 1,669 yards with 20 touchdowns as a junior, helping lead his team to a 4A state title. 247 Sports and Rivals both rank the 6-foot, 200-pound prospect as one of the eight best backs in the 2027 class, and the Composite slots him among the Top 150 players regardless of position.
