CBS Sports went through and identified one “post-spring overreaction” for each of the 17 football programs in the ACC.
“For most teams, this is the time for unbridled optimism and best-case scenarios, though not for everyone,” CBS Sports’ Austin Nivison wrote. “This is what each fan base will be buzzing about as we trudge through the next few months of the offseason.”
For Clemson, CBS Sports says the post-spring overreaction is that “Chad Morris is back to end all the offensive woes.”
“The last time Morris helmed the offense at Clemson, the Tigers averaged more than 40 points per game in back-to-back seasons from 2012-13,” Nivison wrote. “That was also more than a decade ago — and with all due respect to presumed starting quarterback Christopher Vizzina — I’m not sure how well he compares to Tahj Boyd. It’s certainly plausible that the Tigers’ offense improves after a disappointing 2025 campaign, but recent dips in recruiting may have capped that unit’s ceiling.”

As you know, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney officially hired Morris as the Tigers’ new offensive coordinator in January, replacing Garrett Riley, who was fired on Dec. 29 after three seasons as Clemson’s OC.
Morris – who previously served as Clemson’s OC from 2011-14, and also spent one season at Clemson in 2023 as an offensive analyst — returns to Tigertown to try and revitalize an offense that finished eighth in the ACC in total offense in 2025, averaging 392.2 yards per game, and No. 11 in scoring offense at 27.2 points per game. The Tigers also finished sixth in passing yards (267.8 per game) and 11th in rushing (124.5 per game).
In 52 games during Morris’ first stint as Clemson’s offensive coordinator, Clemson averaged 36 points and 468 yards per game. He guided the top three scoring offenses and four of the top five passing offenses in Clemson history during his time in Tigertown.
As for the starting quarterback Morris will be working with this fall, Vizzina is the projected starter, though the QB competition will continue into the summer and fall camp. Following Clemson’s March 28 spring game, Swinney provided clarity on the Tigers’ quarterback battle, saying that heading into the summer, Vizzina remains the QB1, while true freshman Tait Reynolds has emerged as the No. 2 quarterback. After the spring game, Swinney also readily admitted that Reynolds really has a shot at pushing for Clemson’s starting job.
Clemson fans will get their first look at the 2026 Morris-led offense when the Tigers open the season against LSU on Sept. 5 at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La.
