Commitment Watch: Clemson Trending for Priority Target?

One of Clemson’s top recruiting targets is on the verge of revealing his college destination.

Four-star safety Jarrell Chandler (Halls, TN) will announce a commitment on Monday morning, with Clemson, Tennessee, Miami and Vanderbilt being the four finalists.

For quite some time, Chandler seemed like a lock to stay home and choose the Volunteers. However, the winds have shifted. Miami has made a late push, with Chandler taking an unofficial visit to Coral Gables in mid April.

Clemson is also surging late. Chandler was one of numerous prospects on hand for the Elite Retreat back in March, and he’s been on the docket to attend the big official visit weekend, May 29-31. He picked up his offer from the Tigers back in January.

Defensive coordinator Tom Allen, defensive pass game coordinator Thomas Allen and safeties coach Nolan Turner all visited with Chandler at his high school last Monday. While he is being recruited to play safety, the staff sees a lot of versatility with the blue-chip talent.

“They think I can grow into a linebacker or play safety,” Chandler told TCI in a previous interview. “They explained to me that the way the defense works is that they teach everything the same way. I could be playing safety and roll down to play WILL.”

Landing Chandler would be a big boost to Clemson’s 2027 recruiting class seeing as the Tigers have whiffed on a few high-profile targets throughout the past couple of months. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect would also be the second safety to commit in the class, joining three-star Harrison Luke, who announced his pledge last fall.

In today’s NIL landscape, nothing is ever over until it’s over, but after speaking with a source on Sunday, I think the Tigers have put themselves in a good spot to finish this one off. It’s also worth noting that if Clemson does land Chandler, the staff will still have to fend off other programs between now and signing day. It’s never been tougher to hold on to a commit as it is in the NIL era.

Rivals ranks Chandler No. 91 overall and No. 6 among all safeties in the class. Four-star LB Bryce Kish is the only Top 100 talent in the class to this point.

Chandler plays both ways at the high school level. As a defender last season, he totaled 94 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, one interception, eight passes defended and three forced fumbles. On the offensive side, he reeled in 42 catches for 691 yards with seven touchdowns.
