Inside Look at Top Two QB Targets

It’s taken a couple of weeks, but Clemson has officially zeroed in on its top two quarterback targets.

After evaluating several options at Dabo Swinney’s high school camp the first week of June, the Tigers handed out offers to two signal callers on Sunday. The first went to three-star Trey Wright, out of Frisco Lone Star in Texas. The second to four-star Trace Hawkins, out of Calhoun in Georgia.

Wright made his first-ever visit to Clemson on Easter weekend, before returning to work out at camp, where he absolutely impressed onlookers with his passing ability and athleticism. The 5-foot-11 quarterback had more than 5,800 all-purpose yards as a junior, which was tops in the country. His 4,062 passing yards ranked among the Top 20 nationally. He was a MaxPreps All-American and Rivals tabs him as the No. 23 quarterback in the class.

Wright is a two-sport star, also excelling on the hardwood. He is currently in St. Louis taking part in the Nike EBYL Top 100 camp, which is one of the most highly-rated developmental and recruiting camps in amateur basketball.

Florida State, Oklahoma, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina, Arizona, Kansas, Purdue, Utah, Houston, UCLA, Michigan, Kansas State, Pitt and Baylor have all offered White since that initial trip to Clemson on Easter weekend.

Hawkins has been more of a frequent visitor, and he likewise had an outstanding performance at camp. The 6-foot signal caller first visited for the Duke game last season. He returned for the spring game and then was back for the spring elite day in April.

Hawkins also picked up an offer from Virginia Tech on Sunday after working out at camp in Blacksburg. LSU offered earlier this month. North Carolina, Memphis, Vanderbilt, Iowa State, Kentucky and Cincinnati represent some of his other more recent ones. Florida, Auburn, Indiana and Duke have all offered, as well.

As a sophomore last season, Hawkins threw for 2,442 yards with 24 touchdowns to just three interceptions. He also had three rushing touchdowns. Rivals ranks him as the 18th best quarterback in the class.

With the top two targets now established, the race is on. Two offers, one spot. While neither quarterback is expected to shut things down anytime in the near future, we now know the two names to watch.
