Clemson Commit Named ‘Alpha Dog’ of Day 1 at The Opening

Clemson’s highest-ranked recruit, wideout Jamarin Simmons, is currently at Nike headquarters in Oregon, competing at The Opening Finals.

The five-star talent is one of 120 high school prospects competing at the event, and after Day 1 on Thursday, Simmons was tabbed by 247 as the “Alpha Dog’ of Day 1.

While he might not have won every rep, the newly-minted five-star wide receiver put on a show during a lengthy 1-on-1 period with his dynamic route-running. A sudden mover with an explosive lower half, Simmons used a variety of different releases to create early separation before charting his way up or across the field.

Simmons won’t blow many away with his build as he measured just over 5-foot-11 ½, 165 pounds during Wednesday’s check-in, but he’s got sneaky length in the arm and his ability to gear down before quickly hitting the turbo constantly gives defenders fits.” – Andrew Ivins

Rivals named Simmons as one of the top performers of the first day, with the publication slotting him No. 10.

“Simmons was easily one of the most natural route runners out of this group. He’s not the most physical imposing receiver at just under 6-foot, but he’s someone that understands how to leverage his frame in order to create space. Even though he may not be the fastest or biggest receiver, he understands how to setup defenders in order to create space at the top of his routes. He can still win vertically despite not being one of the fastest out here because he understands how to pace his routes and how to essentially create discomfort for defenders. He’s got such a good understanding of leverage in order to create natural space at the top of his routes and getting out of his breaks very comfortably.” – Cody Bellaire of Rivals

Simmons committed to Clemson last month ahead of the big official visit weekend. He picked up the Tigers’ first wide receiver offer last summer after working out at camp and remained the top target at the position throughout.

As a junior, Simmons reeled in 59 catches for 932 yards with 14 touchdowns. He also went 2-of-2 passing for 120 yards with one touchdown throw.

Ranking No. 26 overall at 247, Simmons is the highest-ranked member of the Tigers’ 2027 recruiting class.
