Morris Updates QB Battle Ahead of Camp

While Chris Vizzina is in what Dabo Swinney calls the pole position when it comes to the quarterback race at Clemson, first-year upstart Tait Reynolds is certainly not making it easy.

Reynolds really pushed Vizzina in the spring and has continued to do so through summer workouts, but offensive coordinator Chad Morris told members of the media on Monday that when fall camp gets underway, Vizzina will still be at the top of the depth chart.

“Coming out of spring, coach made it clear, CV is our guy, and he will start fall camp as the guy,” Morris said during Clemson’s annual media day. “But Tait is right there and had a really good spring. Came on at the end.”

However, that doesn’t mean the competition is over, as it is expected to continue throughout fall camp. And whoever comes out of it as the winner will only be better because of that competition.

“I think there is a really great competition going on, and I think we got to have competition. In this entire offense at all positions,” Morris said. “Because competition makes everybody better. You are going to see that through the course of fall camp.”

Vizzina certainly has the leg up when it comes to experience. He is entering his fourth season in the program, while Reynolds just arrived on campus in January. However, with a new scheme being installed under Morris, both are on equal footing in that regard.

Vizzina made one start in place of an injured Cade Klubnik at home against SMU last season, passing for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns. For his career, he is 64-of-105 for 596 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.

Reynolds actually missed most of his senior season in high school with a hamstring injury, making what he’s done in such a short amount of time that much more impressive. As a junior, he completed 62% of his passes for 2,238 yards with 22 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He also rushed 137 times for 1,426 yards, with 19 more touchdowns.

“Clearly CV is our guy starting camp out,” Morris said. “They have both had an incredible summer and going to finish up over the next couple of weeks. But we anticipate it being a great competition.”
