One Clemson player made ESPN’s list of those who could have a significant influence on the 2026 college football campaign.
That player is senior quarterback Christopher Vizzina, who is ranked No. 27 on ESPN’s list of the 40 “most important” college football players this year.
“It’s time for my annual most important players list,” ESPN’s Bill Connelly wrote. “Below are 40 players who could define the season with moments, or long spells, of greatness. Some play for contenders, while others play for the teams that might prevent contenders from reaching their goals. All of them will have a chance to make their mark on 2026.”
Vizzina is the leader in Clemson’s quarterback competition entering fall camp. Vizzina, a former highly touted recruit who backed up Cade Klubnik for the past two years, remains in what head coach Dabo Swinney calls the “pole position” when it comes to the Tigers’ quarterback race.
It’s a two-man battle between Vizzina and true freshman Tait Reynolds, who really pushed Vizzina in the spring and continued to do so through summer workouts.
“My March SP+ rankings liked Clemson by a nose in the No. 2 spot [in the ACC],” Connelly wrote, “but that will require some good stuff from Vizzina, a longtime backup to quarterback Cade Klubnik and the favorite for the starting job in 2026. (He’ll have to beat out true freshman Tait Reynolds, but he is expected to.) With juniors T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr. returning, he’ll certainly have solid pass catchers at his disposal.”
Heading into 2026 after his first three years at Clemson, Vizzina has completed 61 percent of his passes for 596 yards and four touchdowns with one interception in 238 career offensive snaps across 14 games, while also rushing for 109 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries.
In his lone career start thus far, Vizzina threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns in a 35–24 loss to SMU last season, with Klubnik sidelined due to injury.
The Athletic recently released tier rankings of all 138 projected FBS starting quarterbacks and ranked Vizzina No. 53 overall, putting him in Tier 4 with one anonymous ACC staffer describing him as “just OK.” Sports Illustrated ranked all 68 projected Power 4 starting quarterbacks, and Vizzina just cracked the top 50, coming in at No. 50 exactly. In CBS Sports’ ranking of every power conference starting QB, he checked in at No. 44 overall. On3 analyst Andy Staples ranked Vizzina as the ninth-best QB in the ACC.
As for ESPN’s most important players list, Alabama QB Keelon Russell is ranked No. 1, followed by Indiana QB Josh Hoover and then Miami QB Darian Mensah at No. 3.
Mensah and the Hurricanes will travel to face Clemson at Memorial Stadium on Oct. 3.
“After his controversial, late-in-the-transfer-window departure from ACC champion Duke, Mensah will now try to take Miami to the one place Carson Beck couldn’t,” Connelly wrote. “Beck led Miami to within 47 yards of the national title and produced a higher level of efficiency, but Mensah makes more big plays and throws fewer picks. He’ll have both Malachi Toney and 2025 Duke star receiver Cooper Barkate at his disposal. Can he handle a brighter spotlight and higher expectations?”
Miami defensive end Damon Wilson II (No. 17) also made the most important players list, as did Hurricanes wide receiver Malachi Toney (No. 23).
Other players from the ACC on the list include SMU QB Kevin Jennings (No. 26), Louisville QB Lincoln Kienholz (No. 28), Louisville running back Isaac Brown (No. 29) and Florida State wide receiver Duce Robinson (No. 30).
LSU offensive tackle Jordan Seaton, who will square off against Clemson in the Sept. 5 season opener in Baton Rouge, is ranked No. 19.
“If Lane Kiffin fields the typical Lane Kiffin offense in his first season in Baton Rouge, his Tigers will have top-10 potential,” Connelly wrote. “That will obviously require big things from QB transfer Sam Leavitt and a number of new receivers, but in Seaton, Kiffin did grab one of the surest left tackles in the portal. If Seaton is a brick wall, Leavitt will likely do just fine.”
