CLEMSON — Clemson will move to full pads on Wednesday. However, Dabo Swinney already seems pleased with his linebacking corps.

The Tigers wrapped up Day 5 of fall camp on Tuesday inside the Poe Indoor Practice Facility thanks to a nasty storm that ripped through the Clemson area in the early evening.

“Yeah, I am not disappointed,” Swinney said when asked about the group following practice. “I think, again, I’d say the same thing I said about running back. It’s a better room than people think.”

Linebacker depth, or lack thereof, has been a question mark for the Tigers since Luke Ferrelli decided to make more money at Ole Miss, leaving Clemson in a crunch and no opportunity to find another player of his caliber in the transfer portal.

So, Tom Allen, position coach Ben Boulware and Swinney have been making the most of a difficult situation. Obviously, Clemson feels good about All-ACC linebacker and All-American candidate Sammy Brown, but who plays next to and behind him has certainly been a question.

However, through the first week, the linebacking group, as a whole, has stepped up its play.

“And the two guys that that have probably separated a little bit is Jeremiah [Alexander] and Kobe [McCloud],” Swinney said. “Those two guys have really given us confidence that ‘Hey, okay, we’ve kind of got a top three,’ if you will, that we feel really good about.”

The coaches also feel good about Drew Woodaz—who flashed a lot on Tuesday—Fletcher Cothran, Logan Anderson, C.J. Kubah-Taylor and freshman Brayden Reilly

“We’re still (getting better),” Swinney said. “[Boulware] has got a lot on his plate. But the room is competing. Ben’s doing a great job, along with Tom. “We just got to keep going. Got a long way to go before we get to [LSU]. Got to get them ready to play a game and then we’ll go from there.”

Clemson visits Baton Rouge, La., on Sept. 5 to open the season.
