Almost a week into fall camp, and Clemson has several freshmen vying for spots on the two-deep.

Obviously, the first-year player garnering the most attention is quarterback Tait Reynolds, who is locked in a head-to-head battle with Chris Vizzina for the starting job. It’s been quite some time since there was a legitimate quarterback competition in Clemson during the fall, so it’s no surprise this is the battle that is at the forefront for most of the fan base.

Reynolds quickly separated himself from the rest of the room back in the spring, and has continued to turn heads in camp. Whether the young upstart can overtake Vizzina, who Dabo Swinney said was in the pole position heading into the start of camp, remains to be seen, but no matter who wins the job, having those two quarterbacks push one another can only help.

However, Reynolds is far from the only freshman looking to earn oppotunities when the season kicks off in Baton Rouge on September 5 against LSU. Some of the other more notable ones include wideouts Gordon Sellers and Naeem Burroughs, along with safety Polo Anderson. Not to mention offensive lineman Grant Wise, who has been getting a lot of second-team reps at center behind Harris Sewell.

Wise is one of five freshmen offensive linemen who enrolled early. Braden Wilmes, Carter Scruggs, Leo Delaney and Chance Barclay round out the linemen who went through the spring. A sixth, Adam Guthrie, arrived in the summer, but will miss the season recovering from an injury.

“It is a good group,” Swinney said after Tuuesday’s practice. “Most of them were here in January and they are progressing.”

Cornerbacks Marcell Gipson and Shavar Young are competing in a room full of established players in Mike Reed’s room. How much either factor into the equation in year one is stil a question,, but Reed has never shied away from giving his freshmen opportunities.

Kam Cody is the lone freshman at defensive tackle and is battling with numerous older players on the roster. Brayden Reilly, a summer enrollee, is the only freshman linebacker, and is finding his way early on. The same can be said of tight end Tayveon Wilson, another summer enrollee.

“Got some bright spots in there,” Swinney added. “A bunch of guys trying to find there way and go prove they can go do it at this level, too.”
