A former Clemson standout stepped up for a struggling MLB team on Thursday.

Weston Wilson came through with a home run for the Seattle Mariners, providing the only run in Seattle’s 1-0 victory over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

Wilson ripped the 396-foot solo shot to left-center field in the top of the second inning off Yankees lefty ace Max Fried. It marked the fourth homer of the season for Wilson, who also added his fifth stolen base of the year in the contest. 

The homer helped the Mariners, who are still clinging to playoff hopes, snap a six-game losing streak and earn just their sixth win in the last 21 games. Wilson and the Mariners are five games behind the first-place Houston Astros in the American League West standings entering a crucial series between the two teams in Houston this weekend. 

After being designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles back on June 6, Wilson elected free agency six days later and then signed a minor league contract with Seattle on June 14. He was called up to the big-league club on June 19.

Wilson was drafted in the 17th round (No. 501 overall pick) of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers and signed that June. The Phillies later signed him as a free agent in January 2023.

The 31-year-old has posted a slash line of .230/.318/.406 with 13 home runs, 14 doubles, one triple, 40 RBI, 45 runs scored and 13 stolen bases across 150 games in his MLB career, as of Aug. 13. Before playing with Baltimore and Seattle this year, he spent his first three major league seasons with the Phillies from 2023-25.

Wilson made his MLB debut in August 2023, when he homered in his first career plate appearance. On Aug. 15, 2024, Wilson made history by hitting for the cycle in the Phillies’ win over the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, notching the 10th cycle in Phillies history and becoming the first rookie in franchise history to achieve the feat.

At Clemson, Wilson was a career .260 hitter with a .330 on-base percentage in 175 games (164 starts) over three seasons from 2014-16. The High Point, N.C., native had 26 doubles, four triples, 14 homers, 94 RBIs, 95 runs, 62 walks, five hit-by-pitches and 18 steals.
