CLEMSON — Here are a couple of notes and information we gathered Friday from Clemson’s eighth practice of fall camp at Jervey Meadows.

–Clemson had a two-hour practice today, one in which the players said was the most difficult practice of camp, and, from what we heard, in a long while. The Tigers practiced in 96-degree heat with the heat index sitting around 104. And yes, the Tigers were in full pads.

–Obviously, the quarterback competition between Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds is heating up. Everyone I asked today said they are both playing well and making plays. When I asked defensive tackle Markus Strong what he has seen out of the quarterbacks, he highlighted the play of Vizzina in a two-minute drill today.

“CV threw a deep ball, and it was just like the connection, like that chemistry was there, and it was like, ‘Okay!’ I appreciated that,” Strong said. “Even though I was on the field and I don’t want to see us give up nothing, but I know iron sharpens iron. So, in that heat of the moment, I know our DB is going to be there, but it’s like at the same time ‘Oh that’s a beauty of a ball.’

“So, it can’t get much better than that and you appreciate it.”

–We also asked Strong, linebacker Jeremiah Alexander and defensive tackle Amare Adams about the offense and how they look on the other side of the ball.

“I would say this offense is elite. Coach [Chad] Morris, I’ve seen him pull some stuff out every day that’s just like, ‘Okay, like what? I don’t even know. It’s just different,” Strong said.

Alexander and Adams confirmed what Strong was saying, as the offense is definitely making them work hard to get stops.

–The defensive guys also said Morris is working hard to bring physicality back to practice. They all said practices have been physical and there has been an emphasis put on the running game and making them and the offensive line more physical at the point of attack.

–Strong and the others also spoke about defensive tackle Andy Burburija, the JUCO transfer, who has been the talk of camp thus far.

“Power. Vicious. Very vicious,” Strong said. “He’s got a solid body. Look at his frame. He’s huge. Like when it comes to his power, he is raw. When he comes at you, there is not much you can do.”

Strong says Burburija’s legs are like tree trunks. Alexander and Adams also confirmed how powerful the 6-foot-2, 305-pound defensive tackle is.

“That guy right there is very thick. I feel like he is going to be able to hold those double teams and triple teams. It is going to take a lot of guys to get him out of that gap,” Alexander said.

–Clemson will host its first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday morning at Memorial Stadium. The scrimmage is closed to the public.
