CLEMSON — Though Dabo Swinney had to deliver the bad news on Clemson safety Polo Anderson’s injury status, while also giving out other injury news from Saturday’s two-hour scrimmage at Memorial Stadium, he did have some good news to report.
Athlete Chris Denson, who is transitioning from quarterback to position player in fall camp, got his first live work of camp during the Tigers’ scrimmage.
Denson had missed part of camp after tweaking his hamstring prior to the start of fall camp. Live, of course, means being able to be fully tackled in practice.
“They have been smart with him. He has kind of been working back,” Swinney said. “He has kind of progressed into some (individual drills) and team separate stuff. But today was his first day to get some live work.”
Denson moved to the skill position rolls on the team after the spring. He dropped in the quarterback race, but Swinney and offensive coordinator Chad Morris felt he had too much of a skillset to be sitting on the bench.
This summer, he worked out at both wide receiver and running back. In camp, he has primarily been practicing as a wide receiver.
“I have been impressed with him,” Swinney said. “I have to see more because he has not had as much competitive work, but I have seen enough to be encouraged. He is a big kid.”
Swinney says no one really knows how big and powerful Denson is and he has never seen him catch a football either.
“Does he have natural ball skills or is a guy that kind of has to develop? But he has natural ball skills, so it is a good starting point,” Clemson’s head coach said.
Swinney says the next few weeks should give him the time to get a true evaluation of Denson, so they get him up to full speed.
“If we can keep him going in the direction that he is [going], then, I think, he is certainly a guy we can get in the mix.”
