Vizzina Believes He’s Answered Swinney’s Challenge

CLEMSON – On one chilly Wednesday in February, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney marched up to a podium in front of media members following the first day of the spring practice.

While the late-winter chill bit through the air and mesh practice jerseys, Swinney took the opportunity to shed some warm light on the state of his team, especially on the status of the quarterback room.

With three-year starter Cade Klubnik off to train for the upcoming NFL Draft and Clemson opting not to take a signal-caller out of the transfer portal, Swinney made his position clear – rising senior Christopher Vizzina was currently in the “pole position” to take over as the leader of the Tigers’ offense.

It was a start. But, of course, Vizzina had to earn it the weighty title.

“I want to see him take it and run with it,” Swinney said. “He’s, as I said, got the pole position, so I want to see him show up every day, not get too high, not get too low, and just show up every single day and prove it. Just bring that edge every day. Obviously, you want to see leadership at that position.

“I think he’s a natural. He’s got a lot of great relationships with guys on this team. He’s not a guy that just showed up here. He’s been working toward this, but really just want to see him take command of the offense.”

Nearly half a year has passed since Swinney delivered his state of the program address. Since then, nine Clemson players, including Klubnik, were selected in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Tigers’ ran 72 total hill sprints as a form of conditioning and bonding throughout an eight-week summer span. Clemson players have completed spring, summer and fall workouts and are merely three weeks away from opening their season.

With all of that work behind him, Vizzina–or “CV,” as his teammates call him–is still earning his way out of pole position and into the title of “starter.”

In his fourth year of fall camp, first as a potential starter, and first under new offensive coordinator Chad Morris, Vizzina believes he has answered Swinney’s February challenge. And the Birmingham, Ala., native, has not forgotten any of its facets.

“Leadership, just command of the offense and just, being successful on the field,” Vizzina said. “I think there’s a lot that goes into playing quarterback and a lot that I’ve been able to show over the past couple years. But I understand, like, this is the time. This is when people want to see the product of three years and I feel like I’ve been able to put that on full display.”

After the Tigers’ first scrimmage last weekend, Swinney made his position clear– the battle to be Clemson’s quarterback is not over, especially with true freshman Tait Reynolds’ success in his first few months in Upstate South Carolina.

In fact, he went as far as to say that he could wait to name a starter on the actual day of Clemson’s opening game on Sept. 5, something that he has not done in the entirety of his 17-year tenure as head coach.

To his credit, this year’s quarterback decision carries some ultra-heavy implications.

The 2026 first-string signal-caller will follow a certain three-year veteran at a school where elite quarterback play steered the Tigers to two national championships in the 2010s– a program where poor play at the position is scrutinized as a result of high expectations.

Additionally, Clemson’s quarterback will be in charge of helping the Tigers improve upon a 7-6 finish last year with an entirely new offense to maneuver. On top of it all, the Tigers enter the season unranked for the first time in 15 years.

The pressure is mounting for whichever quarterback gets the nod.

Vizzina welcomes it.

“Tunnel vision mentality,” he said. “Just knowing that no one’s coming to save you. There’s a lot of people that dream to be a quarterback here and be the quarterback here and it’s been my dream. And so, just knowing that there’s no one coming to save me. Like you got to perform. It’s a game of performance. My coaches can prepare me. My teammates can help me prepare as well, but then when we get on the field like I have to perform. That’s kind of the mentality.”

Vizzina and the Tigers will wrap up their final week of fall camp with a scrimmage Thursday as they enter their first week of classes. After their final day of camp on Friday, there will be only 15 remaining days until Clemson opens its season against LSU in Tiger Stadium.

The Tiger in pole position will come ready, even if he will not know his starting status until he runs out in front of 100,000 LSU fans

“Honestly, I feel like my whole life, this is what I’m built for, this opportunity,” he said.
