Notebook: Clemson QB Dilemma Close to Resolution

CLEMSON — The Clemson football team took Wednesday off from practice, as it was the first day of classes at Clemson University.

Head coach Dabo Swinney has always given his team the first day of classes off. It also gives the coaches a day to go over film and evaluate where the players are at as they head into the final scrimmage of camp, which will be Thursday afternoon.

Here is some of what we heard heading into the final two days of camp.

–It appears we are getting close to a resolution at quarterback. From what The Clemson Insider learned from multiple sources, senior Christopher Vizzina has created a little separation in the Tigers’ search for a new starting quarterback.

–Though freshman Tait Reynolds has had a good camp and has progressed better than the coaches expected him to, one source told us Vizzina has had an exceptional camp and right now is playing at a different level than the freshman.

–Will Swinney go ahead and pull the trigger and name Vizzina the starter for the LSU game on Sept. 5? Our sources were not sure about that, but if it happens, one source told us it likely would happen the week of the LSU game because Swinney and offensive coordinator Chad Morris want to keep both quarterbacks engaged and battling for a few more weeks. Swinney, of course, said he would not be against waiting until right after kickoff to make a decision.

–I’ll be honest, with Vizzina made available to the media following Tuesday’s practice, was Swinney already trying to tell us something. By the way, as a reminder, freshmen are not allowed to speak at Clemson until they play in a game. That is a rule Swinney has had in place since he became the full-time head coach in 2009. That is why Reynolds has not spoken to the media.

–I asked one of our sources if it is possible that Reynolds plays against LSU, and they told me they would not be surprised if he does.

–No matter who is playing quarterback, they have to have a good offensive line. We were told the O-Line overall played well in last Saturday’s scrimmage, but they did have a few issues with pass protection. There were a couple of free runners at the quarterbacks, which likely is due to inexperience. Not exactly what the fans want to hear heading into Baton Rouge, La., for a night game in a couple of weeks. No matter who is the quarterback, this needs to get better if the Tigers have any chance of winning at LSU.

–The other day, Swinney mentioned the running backs and said there is Gideon Davidson, David Eziomume, Jarvis Green and Jay Haynes on one side, and then there is this special little box for Chris Johnson, Jr. What does that mean? Will Clemson have two running backs on the field at the same time? Will Johnson lineup like a receiver at times? These are all questions I asked my sources, and they would not say. So, it appears offensive coordinator Chad Morris and Swinney are keeping this one close to the vest.

–The defense has looked good in practice and in the scrimmage. We were told, though they gave up a few plays, the defense won the day in the first scrimmage. That is a good sign because it is never good if the offense already has the upper hand in camp.

–The defensive line played well, we are told. No surprise here, but we heard more about defensive tackle Andy Burburija this afternoon. We were told he has been unblockable at times in practice and has been very disruptive. Not sure if position coach Nick Eason will start the JUCO transfer at LSU, but it would not surprise me if he does considering what we have heard coming out camp the last few weeks.

–On the special teams front, we were told Johnson has emerged as the Tigers’ go-to guy on punt returns. If that is the case, it definitely gives Clemson its first true speedster returning punts since the days of C.J. Spiller and Jacoby Ford, who both are now on Swinney’s staff.
