LSU is set to add a former NFL talent to its roster less than two weeks out from its season opener against Clemson.

Cleveland Browns tight end Dae’Quan Wright was waived on Sunday, and if he clears waivers he has an agreement in place to join the Bayou Bengals. He could become the first player to go from an NFL team back to college football.

Wright participated in warmups ahead of the Browns preseason game over the weekend, but did not take a snap in the contest. The former Ole Miss tight end is one of 16 players in Louisiana that filed lawsuits against the NCAA to gain additional eligibility. All 16 were granted a temporary restraining order to return to college football.

Wright went undrafted in April, but signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on May 1. He was released by the Eagles on Aug. 10 and picked up on waivers by Cleveland the next day. Now he waits to see if he will clear waivers.

While head coach at Ole Miss, Lane Kiffin signed Wright out of the transfer portal following the 2023 season. In two years with the Rebels, he caught 66 passes for 1,029 yards and nine touchdowns.

Whether or not Wright actually suits up for LSU remains to be seen, as the SEC has a rule in place that prohibits athletes from transferring within the conference when it is not their sports transfer portal window. Commissioner Greg Sankey recently sent out a memo to all member schools reminding them of the rule.

LSU also added a piece to its defense on Friday, with former Notre Dame defensive end Junior Tuihalamaka committing to the Tigers. Tuihalamaka was one of those 16 Louisiana players to be granted an extra season, although he’d never signed with an NFL team. He appeared in 12 games last season, with three of those being starts, and finished with 12 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and one sack.
