Linebacker depth has been a main talking point among Clemson fans throughout the offseason.

Sammy Brown is the anchor of the room, with the junior collecting numerous preseason honors over the past couple of weeks, while Jeremiah Alexander and Kobe McCloud round out the top three spots.

However, it is the depth behind those three that have created some questions. While the rest of the room doesn’t lack on bodies, it certainly lacks in experience.

Fletcher Cothran is likely the next in line, and while the former walk-on is entering his fifth season, he’s played just 36 career snaps. CJ Kubah-Taylor and Drew Woodaz are both entering year three, but the two have combined to play 26 defensive snaps. Logan Anderson is coming off a redshirt season while recovering from a torn ACL suffered late during his senior season in high school.

However, despite the inexperience, Dabo Swinney was pleased with what he saw from his young linebackers in fall camp.

“That is a group with the arrow up,” the head coach said.

“Really proud of Kubah, Woodaz and Logan, That is the group — I kind of thought those first four guys would affirm that they are ready to go play, but it was that next group that we needed to see a big jump, and they have done a great job. I mean, a great job.”

Woodaz flashed his potential during camp, which included picking off a Tait Reynolds pass in the second scrimmage and returning it for a touchdown.

“Drew is a guy that looks like a linebacker now, and he has got three years left,” Swinney said. “He has kind of been in the crockpot. He is going to be a special teams guy, but he is athletic, and he is coming.”

Kubah-Taylor missed a little time banged up during the first few days of camp, but really started to settle in after returning.

“Kubah is a thumper. He is a thumper,” Swinney said. “He was limited early in camp, but getting him back going now. He is on his way. He’s got three years left. He is going to be a good player. He is a little bit of that crockpot, too. He is almost ready.”

Anderson is a player that Swinney is really high on. Rivals ranked him as the fifth-best linebacker in the 2025 recruiting class and now that he’s fully healthy, he is starting to show some of that potential.

“Then Logan — the ultimate crockpot kid. Tore his ACL in the playoffs in high school, so he was really out last year. That kid can run. He’s got great size. He is physical. He has flashed several times. He’s got all of his football in front of him.”

While Brown, McCloud and Alexander are likely to take on a bulk of the work, Clemson is now feeling better about some of the depth behind them.

“I think the group has done what we needed them to do,” Swinney said. “That group has been right on point in fall camp.”
