Christopher Vizzina has stayed true and loyal to Clemson, patiently waiting for the last three years for his opportunity to be the Tigers’ full-time starting quarterback.

Unfortunately, Vizzina’s long-awaited chance to be the starter didn’t go anywhere close to how he had hoped, but instead turned out to be a disaster.

Vizzina endured a brutal first half against No. 11 LSU in the two teams’ 2026 season opener at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La., on Saturday night. LSU humiliated Clemson, taking a 28-point lead into the locker room at halftime en route to an eventual 51-10 victory.

Making just his second career start, Vizzina struggled mightily while completing 10-of-16 passes for just 83 yards with no touchdowns and one big interception, as he and his Tigers couldn’t get anything going on offense. In the first half, Vizzina went 6-of-11 passing for only 51 yards.

Vizzina played most of the first half before being benched for true freshman Tait Reynolds. Before the game, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said that Vizzina did not have a “lifetime contract” on the starting job after narrowly beating out Reynolds in fall camp, and with Clemson trailing big late in the second quarter, Swinney pulled Vizzina in favor of Reynolds in an attempt to spark the offense. Vizzina later re-entered the game in the fourth quarter with the score 44-3 at the time.

Vizzina’s early struggles were highlighted by a pick-six intercepted by LSU’s Jordan Ross, who raced 30 yards for a touchdown that gave his team a 17-3 lead late in the first quarter with the game still close before that critical mistake.

In his first career road start in what was a very hostile environment – Vizzina’s only prior start came at home in 2025 against SMU, when then-starter Cade Klubnik was out due to injury — Vizzina looked like a deer in headlights at times against LSU, and he probably should have had a second pass picked off in the second quarter. Neither of those throws was a great decision.

While Vizzina struggled, he didn’t have much help at all around him. He faced overwhelming defensive pressure from the Bayou Bengals, while getting no help from his offensive line or running game. Clemson’s offensive line couldn’t hold up against LSU’s talented D-line, and Vizzina didn’t have many clean pockets to throw from, nor were the Tigers able to get anything going on the ground.

The start in Baton Rouge against a stout LSU defense proved to be too tall a task for Vizzina and the offense, both of whom were unable to find a rhythm and sputtered early and often.

Clemson will return to the field next Saturday for its 2026 home opener against Georgia Southern at Memorial Stadium (7:30 p.m., ACC Network).
