Clemson’s Swinney is excited to meet Cal’s Swinney when the Tigers travel to Berkeley, Calif., to take on the Golden Bears on Friday night.

Dabo Swinney joked during his radio show Monday night that he must have “a long-lost cousin out there in Cali” — Bastian Swinney, Cal’s starting center.

While preparing for Cal, Dabo got a kick out of learning that there’s a Swinney on the team.

“Apparently my cousin is the starting center for ‘em,” Dabo joked. “His name is Bastian Swinney. … I got a long-lost cousin out there in Cali, I guess.”

Despite sharing a relatively uncommon last name in college football, the two are not related.

Nevertheless, Clemson’s head coach found the coincidence funny and noted, “I look forward to meeting him when I get out there.”

Bastian Swinney is a 6-foot-6, 315-pound redshirt senior who is currently playing in his sixth season for the Golden Bears. The Edina, Minn., native has played in 41 career games and made 19 starts, including a career-high 10 starts in 2024.

He also shares the field with his younger brother, Meyer Swinney, a redshirt freshman wide receiver for the team.

Kickoff of Friday’s game between the Tigers (2-1, 1-0 ACC) and Golden Bears (2-1, 1-0) is set for 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
