One of South Carolina’s top defensive linemen’s status with the team is currently up in the air.

Shane Beamer announced on Sunday that Gamecocks edge rusher Dylan Stewart has been suspended indefinitely. Stewart not only threw a punch during South Carolina’s blowout loss to Alabama Saturday night, he also refused to come off the field when coaches were trying to sub him out.

“That’s not how we do things around here,” Beamer said. “I’m embarrassed to see that because that’s not what we’re about.”

“I’ll make the decision of what his future looks like beyond this week here in the next day or so … but he won’t play this week against Kentucky. There’s a standard of how we do things in this program, and that was not it last night.”

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound pass rusher missed the first two games of the season while dealing with an injury.

Stewart came into the season being hyped as one of the best defensive players in the country. One NFL analyst, Jordan Reid, recently suggested he’d be the first defender off the board in next April’s draft.
