Herbstreit on Clemson vs. Miami: ‘Biggest Game in the ACC So Far’

Kirk Herbstreit will be on the call for the ABC broadcast of Clemson’s big Week 5 matchup against fourth-ranked Miami on Saturday night at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium.

Saturday morning on ESPN’s College GameDay, Herbstreit gave some thoughts on the ACC showdown, which features the only two teams that already came into Week 5 with a 2-0 record in conference play.

The Hurricanes enter 4-0 overall, while the Tigers are 3-1 overall after bouncing back with three straight wins following their blowout season-opening loss at LSU.

“The biggest game in the ACC so far this season takes place today down there in Clemson with No. 4 Miami coming into town,” Herbstreit said. “Death Valley is going to have to be a difference with the way quarterback Darien Mensah has been throwing. Dabo Swinney is doing a good job of getting his team on track. He knows that this will be a different set of challenges with Mensah and all of those weapons.”

Led by the aforementioned Heisman Trophy contender Mensah — who enters the contest with a remarkable 88.7% completion percentage, 14 passing touchdowns and zero interceptions, with more touchdown passes than incompletions (12) — Miami boasts the nation’s top total offense, averaging 588.8 yards per game. The Hurricanes are averaging 51.8 points per game, third nationally.

Facing Mensah, star sophomore wide receiver Malachi Toney (34 receptions, 564 receiving yards, six touchdowns) and the Hurricanes’ high-powered offense will be a huge test for Clemson’s defense, but the unit has has significantly rebounded and tightened up following the brutal season-opening loss to LSU.

“I think Clemson’s defense has improved,” Herbstreit said. “I think Clemson feels better.”

The winner of the game will claim lone possession of first place in the conference standings.

Miami enters the matchup as a 15.5-point favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

“They have committed to the true freshman quarterback,” Herbstreit said of Clemson’s Tait Reynolds. “We will find out tonight, if they can get their running game going. The crowd has to be a factor. The running game has to be a factor. And tonight we will find out how good this year’s version of the Miami Hurricanes team and defense are this year.”

Herbstreit will be the analyst for the ABC broadcast alongside play-by-play man Chris Fowler and sideline reporter Holly Rowe. Kickoff at Clemson’s Death Valley is set for 7:30 p.m.
