Swinney Gives Injury Update on Starting OL

As Clemson heads into its open date this weekend, head coach Dabo Swinney provided the latest injury update on a starting offensive lineman.

Swinney said he expects junior Elyjah Thurmon, Clemson’s starting left guard, to be fully healthy for the Tigers’ next game vs. Charleston Southern on Oct. 17 after the off week.

“Being able to get Elyjah back healthy obviously is going to be a big help for us,” Swinney said this week.

Thurmon suffered a left knee injury during Clemson’s win at Cal on Sept. 25. Although he wasn’t on the injury report for the Oct. 3 matchup vs. Miami and was available, he was ultimately held out of action after being unable to practice all week leading up to the contest. Sophomore Gavin Blanchard started in Thurmon’s place at left guard during the 41-13 loss to the Hurricanes.

Prior to being limited to 17 snaps in the injury-shortened appearance at Cal, Thurmon played all 49 snaps in the season opener at LSU before playing 55 snaps in Week 2 vs. Georgia Southern and then 73 snaps in the come-from-behind victory vs. North Carolina in Week 3.

During his radio show Monday night, Swinney was asked if there’s been any thoughts about potentially moving Thurmon from left guard to the right side of the offensive line.

“Oh yeah. We look at everything,” Swinney said. “He can play anywhere. Elyjah can play five positions. He can play center, he can play left tackle or right tackle. So, yeah, we evaluate everything.”

After some struggles on the right side of the line in the loss to Miami, Clemson offensive line coach Matt Luke revealed on Tuesday that sophomore Easton Ware will be the new starter at right guard after junior Ronan O’Connell started the first five games there.
