After the first month-plus of the 2026 college football season, ESPN stacked up the freshmen who have impressed the most thus far.
Clemson quarterback Tait Reynolds is ranked No. 22 overall in ESPN’s ranking of college football’s top 25 freshmen.
Senior quarterback Christopher Vizzina started Clemson’s opener at LSU, but Reynolds saw his first collegiate action off the bench. In Week 2 vs. Georgia Southern, Reynolds replaced Vizzina in the first quarter following an interception and an elbow injury to Vizzina, sparking the offense with extended playing time.
Reynolds was officially named the starter for Clemson’s ACC opener vs. North Carolina in Week 3, when he led a second-half rally to earn his first win. He then helped guide the Tigers to a win over Cal in Week 4 in his first career road start.
ESPN analyst Billy Tucker noted that while Reynolds’ statistical production has not been “eye-popping,” the Tigers have placed a significant amount of responsibility on him early in his career.
“Reynolds hasn’t put up huge numbers, but Clemson has asked a lot of him early,” Tucker wrote. “He helped the Tigers finish off Georgia Southern after Christopher Vizzina went down and then beat North Carolina and California in his first two starts. There have been some freshman moments — he has been sacked 16 times in five games — and the production isn’t eye-popping, but Reynolds has at least given Clemson a chance to win while running the offense.”
In five games (three starts), Reynolds has completed 83 of his 128 passes (64.8%) for 816 yards and one touchdown with three interceptions, while rushing for 61 yards.
Reynolds is coming off a gritty and gutsy performance in Clemson’s 41-13 loss to Miami on Oct. 3, when he completed 29-of-44 passes for a career-high 295 yards despite facing an immense amount of pressure from the Hurricanes throughout the contest and being sacked six times.
Following the open date, Reynolds and the Tigers return to action on Oct. 17 vs. Charleston Southern at Memorial Stadium (12 p.m., ACC Network).
Oregon State wide receiver Jesse Legree tops ESPN’s list of college football’s top 25 freshmen, with LSU defensive tackle Deuce Geralds, Georgia offensive guard Zykie Helton, Southern Cal defensive end Luke Wafle and Southern Cal wide receiver Kayden Dixon-Wyatt rounding out the top five.
Along with Reynolds, two other players from the ACC made the list in Miami safety JJ Dunnigan and Pittsburgh running back Damon Ferguson Jr.
South Carolina offensive tackle Darius Gray is No. 15.
