Highly-Rated DT Calls Process at Clemson ‘Unique’

CLEMSON — A very highly touted member of the 2029 recruiting class made his first game-day visit to Clemson over the weekend.

Four-star Tatum White (Herd County, GA), who profiles as one of the top defensive tackles in the class. was on hand for the Tigers’ 37-0 shutout win over Charleston Southern.

“When I got there, everybody was really nice,” White told The Clemson Insider. “I got to see the really cool running down the hill. You know, the entrance. It was pretty cool. I got to go up to the top by the rock. I liked the defense. They played pretty well. I liked the coaches.”

During the visit, White got to spend some time with multiple coaches, including Nick Eason.

“He is pretty cool,” White added. “I like the energy he brings with how he talks to the players. He was easy to talk to.”

The 6-foot-5, 291-pounder also learned about Clemson’s very meticulous and much different recruiting process. The Tigers don’t generally offer high school prospects before the start of their junior seasons, meaning players in White’s class won’t start earning offers until next summer.

Opening offers tend to coincide with Dabo Swinney’s high school camp each summer, which is typically held the first week of June. As of now, White said he is planning to attend.

“They don’t give out non-commitable offers,” White said. “They have a camp in June, and (Eason) said if I came down there, they would most likely offer. But that they don’t offer underclassmen. They only offer people that would be a committable offer.”

White also learned Clemson is routinely one of the Power-4 schools that hands out the fewest offers each cycle.

“I think it is unique,” White said. “They are trying to give offers not just based off of potential. They actually wait and see how the players develop. They don’t just give out offers just to say you have an offer. I think they really want to see the talent in you.”

Through six games, White was credited with 24 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, one sack, two hurries and one forced fumble. He currently profiles as one of the five-best defensive tackles in his class.

Auburn, Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Tennessee and Georgia Tech are some of the schools that have already extended offers to the blue-chip talent. He is hoping to add one from Clemson next summer.

“I would feel very blessed,” White said. “I would feel like I earned it because they don’t give out many. I feel like that would make me feel like I arrived. That I am actually a great player.”

Auburn, Georgia, Alabama, Florida State and Florida have also received game-day visits this season. He still plans to visit Miami and Alabama for the Iron Bowl.

With White still being just a sophomore, this is really his first wave of visits, with the goal being to get a good read on the coaching staffs. He’s also paying attention to the environments, seeing as fan support is another big factor.

“I am looking at how the players react to the coaches,” White said. “To see if they actually have a good connection with the coaches. Because I don’t want to go somewhere I feel like I wouldn’t like my coach or anything like that. Where I play at, my high school, we have a really big fan base, and the community comes out and supports. So a good fan base is something else I look for. With them behind you, I feel like you could play 10 times better.”
