Florida State head coach Mike Norvell says the Seminoles are focused and “ready to embrace” the challenge and opportunity that Clemson presents.
The Tigers will visit Tallahassee on Saturday (7 p.m., ACC Network) as Clemson seeks to extend its current road winning streak at Doak Campbell Stadium to five games.
Clemson enters the matchup 4-3 overall and 2-2 in ACC play, while Florida State is 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
“Got a very talented opponent coming in Saturday night,” Norvell said, “and it will be a great challenge, but one that our guys are absolutely ready to embrace and to go play our best game, and that is the expectation for us.”
Coming off a bye week following FSU’s heartbreaking double-overtime loss at Miami on Oct. 17, Norvell detailed what he observed from the Seminoles during their open week, saying he was “really, really pleased with the work I saw from our guys.”
“Obviously attitude, approach, just the collective effort as you get a chance to go and you see where issues have showed up throughout the course of the season,” Norvell said. “Some of the things that we’ve done well, some of the things we need to build upon, and then coming off of our last game where we did show some improvement in areas that I think are going to be absolutely necessary for us to continue to grow on here in this back half of the season.
“The mindset, the approach, is right where I want it to be. I think the guys have the attitude and understanding of the things that we’ve got to control as we go into each week, and the games that are in front of us. There’s a lot of excitement to get back out on the field and to go show who we are and what we’re about.”
Meanwhile, the Tigers are looking to bounce back from a 20-16 home loss to Virginia Tech last Saturday.
Norvell broke down his thoughts on Clemson’s schemes, specifically on the defensive side of the ball.
“They’re aggressive in what they do,” Norvell said. “They blitz about 50% of the time, but even when they don’t blitz, you feel the movements. They’re athletic. They’ve got good size across the board. Their front seven — I think, probably one of the biggest improvements within their team is just in the defensive backfield. They’re able to play a lot of man.”
“So last week, they had six sacks, 10 TFLs,” Norvell added. “This is a team that they can create problems for you. They’ve had two games that have kind of been outliers for them. But they do a good job of running the football, they’re violent when they get there. Couple that with the amount of pressure that they bring, we’ve got to be on point in all things protection wise, obviously in your run game, seeing for run-throughs and then trying to put yourself in the best position, because they’re going to attack you from a variety of different ways.”
Norvell singled out Ashton Hampton and had high praise for the star Clemson junior cornerback, while noting that the Tigers are moving him around defensively.
“I think Hampton’s probably the best corner that we’ve faced up to this point this year,” Norvell said. “I mean, and they’re moving him all over, whether it’s the best receiver that he’s gone against. He’s playing the slot, playing outside. But I think that’s one of the things that’s really allowed them to grow and do more defensively is just the ability to play man and play it well.”
The Tigers are currently a 6.5-point underdog against the Seminoles, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
Clemson has won two straight against Florida State and is 9-1 in its last 10 games overall against the Seminoles, including its 4-0 mark in Tallahassee in that span. Florida State leads the all-time series, 21-17.
