Swinney Gives Latest Positive Update on Thurmon

The news continues to be positive on Clemson offensive lineman Elyjah Thurmon.

As you know, Thurmon had to be stretchered off the field after suffering a scary injury during Clemson’s 36-24 win last Saturday night at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla.

The injury happened on a Clemson running play early in the second quarter, when there was a head-to-head collision between Thurmon and a Florida State linebacker and Thurmon was hit on the left side of his head by the FSU defender.

There was an extended delay in the game as Thurmon was tended to. When he was taken away on a cart, he gave a thumbs-up. He was taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for further evaluation, accompanied by his mother.

After the game, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said the signs were positive regarding his injury. Swinney said it was mainly concerns about a concussion and head/neck area, and that he expected Thurmon to be kept in the hospital overnight. On Sunday, Clemson Football provided a positive update, announcing that he had been discharged from the hospital and was returning to Clemson.

Swinney gave the latest update on Thurmon during his radio show Monday night. Swinney said he was back on campus and in Swinney’s team meeting Monday. He is now in concussion protocol, according to Swinney, but Clemson’s head coach added that Thurmon is “doing great.”

“He’s doing great. He was in my team meeting today. He took a real shot to the head,” Swinney said. “It wasn’t an intentional thing or anything, it just was kind of in the pile, and a guy’s flying in. You see it easily on tape. It was a lick. So, he’s dealing with the concussion protocol. But it really shook him up. So, they took an abundance of precaution with him because of the extent of it.

“And he’s doing great. He’s doing great. So, he’ll be in the protocol, and they’ve got a process that you go through there. But as far as checking out all the vitals and all that stuff, he checked out great. We got him back Sunday morning, we were able to get him back.”

Thurmon, Clemson’s starting left guard, has started all seven games he’s played in this year.

The 6-foot-4, 325-pounder was limited by injury to 129 offensive snaps over three games (one start) in 2025.

A Mississippi native who finished his prep career in Georgia before signing with the Tigers in 2024, Thurmon played 146 snaps from scrimmage over eight games (one start) in his debut 2024 campaign.
