During his weekly Tuesday press conference, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney gave more on starting center Harris Sewell’s injury that will keep him sidelined for at least a couple of games.
On Monday, Swinney said on his radio show that Sewell will have to have a minor surgery. On Tuesday, Swinney revealed what the surgery is, saying that it’s tightrope surgery for an ankle injury.
“Yeah [tightrope surgery]. His ankle,” Swinney said.
Sewell suffered his injury in last Saturday’s 36-24 win at Florida State, with freshman Grant Wise taking over once Sewell exited the game in the second half. Sewell did return for the final play, coming back to do the victory formation snap at the end. However, after the game, Sewell was seen in a walking boot.
On Tuesday, Swinney spoke a little more about Sewell’s timetable for return.
Swinney said Sewell could “maybe” come back for the Nov. 20 game at Duke, but it’s “most likely” that he will return for the regular season finale vs. rival South Carolina on Nov. 28.
So, at the very least, Sewell will be out for the next two games — Saturday’s game at Syracuse and the Nov. 14 game vs. Georgia Tech. However, it’s looking more likely that he will miss the next three games.
“Harris is going to be out for probably a few games,” Swinney said Tuesday. “They feel like we’ll get him back for the South Carolina game, maybe the Duke. But most likely, they feel pretty confident about South Carolina, so we’ll see.”
Sewell, a senior, has started every game at center this season for Clemson. The 6-foot-4, 310-pounder came into the season having appeared in 35 games, with 17 of those being starts. The former four-star talent has been one of the most consistent players up front this season for the Tigers.
With Sewell out, Wise will be the starting center for Saturday’s game at Syracuse, which is set for a 12 p.m. kickoff on ESPN2.
