Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney met with the media during his Sunday evening teleconference following the Tigers’ 22-7 win over Georgia Southern on Saturday night at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium.

Swinney gave an update on the severity of the injury to senior quarterback Christopher Vizzina, who was injured in the first half and did not return. Vizzina was replaced by true freshman Tait Reynolds after the Tigers’ third series.

Swinney said during his postgame press conference that the Tigers planned to put Reynolds in for the fourth series, regardless of what happened, but Vizzina couldn’t go back in later because he “took a shot” on his left arm and was “numb” in that arm.

On Sunday evening, Swinney discussed Vizzina’s arm injury and said he will go into Saturday’s game against North Carolina as the backup QB, while Reynolds will get the start.

“He should be able to play, but will be in a backup role,” Swinney said. “Had a little bit of a left arm injury, but not something that they think will keep him from playing. But he’ll go in this week as the backup and Tait will go in as the starter, and we’ll go from there.”

Swinney added that Vizzina is expected to be available for the game despite his injury.

“He’s got a left kind of arm injury, but they feel like he’ll be available. So, we’ll see. … That’s the information I was just given,” Swinney said.

Swinney was asked when exactly Vizzina got hurt Saturday.

“He just took a hit somewhere in the first half, and he didn’t really know it,” Swinney said. “He just couldn’t really feel his left arm very well, and I didn’t know it either until we were getting ready to put him back in. So, he’s got a little area that we’ll have to protect on his left arm, but they feel like it’s not something that he can’t play with.”

Vizzina started the game against Georgia Southern and played the first three series, completing 4 of 7 passes for 19 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Moore that gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 11:01 to play in the first quarter. However, Vizzina’s final pass of the contest was a poorly thrown deep ball that was intercepted.

After taking over for Vizzina, Reynolds threw for 178 yards on 16-of-27 passing and led five drives that ended with field goals.

Clemson will host North Carolina at Memorial Stadium this Saturday in the ACC opener for both teams. Kickoff is set for noon on ESPN.
