During his press conference Thursday before the start of fall camp, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided the latest update on the progress of junior defensive tackle Hevin Brown-Shuler, who will miss the 2026 season while treating Hodgkin lymphoma. Swinney said Brown-Shuler is “doing amazing” right now and continues to make progress in his recovery.

Swinney also gave updates on two other players who have “long-term” injuries and there’s a “good chance” they’ll be out for the 2026 season.

One of those players is true freshman offensive lineman Adam Guthrie, who tore his meniscus in workouts and is also dealing with a lingering high school injury.

Though Swinney doesn’t expect Guthrie to play this year, Swinney believes he will still “learn a lot” in Year 1 with the Tigers.

Guthrie enrolled at Clemson this summer. The 6-foot-6, 285-pounder from Miami Trace High School (Washington Court House, Ohio) was rated as a four-star prospect in the 2026 recruiting class by ESPN, which ranked him as the No. 40 offensive tackle nationally. He earned first-team All-Frontier Athletic Conference and all-district honors as a senior in 2025, when he anchored an offensive line that powered Miami Trace to 3,723 rushing yards, 48 rushing touchdowns and a 10-2 record. He was not charged by his coaching staff with a single sack allowed.

“He had had an injury in high school he’s been dealing with, then had a meniscus that he tore in workouts, so we went ahead and fixed that,” Swinney said of Guthrie. “We’ve already done that, and then we’re going to go ahead and fix the other issue he’s been dealing with, because he’s going to be out for a significant amount of time anyway. So, he just got here, so we’re going to take care of him. He’ll work his way back as the season goes, but don’t anticipate him being able to play this season.

“But still a big year for him. Going to be a really good player, and a lot of work ahead for him. Obviously gotta get back physically, but strength and conditioning, mentally, learning what to do, the system. Going to learn a lot from watching the guys this fall.”

Swinney said senior running back Peyton Streko also has a long-term injury that will likely cause him to miss the upcoming season as well. Streko, who opted to walk on at Clemson in 2023 over scholarship offers from several FBS programs, has rushed twice for 15 yards in six career game appearances. Last year, he qualified for a medical redshirt after missing the entire season with a shin injury.

Besides Streko and Guthrie, Swinney says his team is in “great shape” from an injury standpoint heading into fall camp.

“Peyton Streko, who’s a depth running back for us, he’s coming off a surgery as well, so he’s probably in that long-term category,” Swinney said. “… Everybody else is in a good spot as far as where they’re progressing to get back at some point. But other than that, we’re in great shape. I think our strength and conditioning staff did a fantastic job this summer, getting these guys to this point where they’re ready to go practice football. Now, we’ve got to take it from there. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”
